Unlike Silver Age Clark, the modern Clark’s hair could be cut by heat vision – in fact he even notes that if he isn’t careful, he could “cut” himself with the lasers from his eyes. Superman’s invulnerable hair and shaving habits were also touched on in other Superman media.

Superman uses his heat vision and a mirror. The mirror reflects the heat vision to cleanly shave off his beard. He does this by lowering the destructive power, and increasing the intensity.

In John Byrne’s The Man of Steel, a retelling/retcon of Superman’s origin, he has Superman shave via heat vision. He has a small piece of the Kryptonian spacecraft that brought him to Earth, which he bounces his heat vision off of to shave.

Why didn’t Superman cut his beard?

“Superman” #201 gave an official answer to what was basically the unofficial way of handling these things – Superman didn’t have to worry about cutting his beard because so long as he was under a yellow sun (and therefore had his powers), his hair did not grow!

Invulnerability, however, has also given Clark some unique problems – mostly dealing with his hair. Like every other part of his body, Superman’s hair is also indestructible, allowing him to smash through buildings without mussing up his famous spit curl hairdo.
