Is the universe deterministic or not?

Is the universe deterministic or not?

The quantum universe is fundamentally probabilistic, unlike the deterministic universe described by classical physics. Einstein believed that the universe and its laws must be strictly deterministic. It was this kind of indeterminism that seemed to be present in the new theory of quantum mechanics.

Is quantum theory deterministic?

Quantum theory is deterministic about the time evolution of the wave function, but the wave function only predicts probabilities so it is nondeterministic about observations. Even interpretations, like Bohm’s, that claim to be deterministic involve nonlocal interactions that lead to nondeterministic measurements.

Is the universe deterministic or probabilistic?

If you mean: 1) the universe is something outside of our understanding of it, but we attempt to model it with our theories. In that case, the universe could never be either deterministic or probabilistic, because both those words are attributes of models of the universe, not what you mean by the universe itself.

Is reality deterministic according to quantum mechanics?

No, quantum mechanics has shown conclusively that reality is probabilistic, not deterministic. This was very upsetting to many people back in the 1920’s or so, before QM became strongly established, but that is the way it is.

Is quantum mechanics deterministic or stochastic?

If the wave-function itself is tantamount to reality, then quantum mechanics (and any quantum mechanical universe) can be said to be deterministic. If, on the other hand, the wave-function is merely a probability amplitude for classical state variables, then reality is stochastic.

Is Bohmian mechanics deterministic or non deterministic?

For example, Bohmian Mechanics is a deterministic theory that can underlie non-relativistic quantum mechanics, in the sense that Bohmian Mechanics makes quantum mechanics look like classical statistical mechanics, which is presumably explained by deterministic classical mechanics.
