Without sex, there would be no procreation of our species. This area of the brain is associated with sexual desire. The amygdala is near the hypothalamus, and is responsible for alerting us to changes in our environment detected by our senses. This part of the brain is also associated with sexual arousal.

Do we choose our desires?

Yes a human is capable of controlling their own desires. A desire is something that you put value on in your life. What might be a desire to you, may be of no interest to me.

So basically, our desires are born in the following ways: lacking of some things our body/brain perceive as important (safety, love, approval, food) receiving things that our body/brain perceive as threatening (punishment, death, discomfort)

The limbic system is important for control of mood, and the nucleus accumbens signal excitement and arousal.

Can desire be controlled?

The most significant thing we can do to control our desires is to let go of the attachment we have to them. The Buddha believed desire is the reason for pain and suffering in the world. These are reasonable desires and if not met, we become disappointed, angry and even depressed.

How do I get rid of my desire?

Here are all the different ways you can use to control your desires:

  1. Change your environment to prevent relapse.
  2. Accept the temptations, don’t resist them, for they’d only rebound to come back stronger.
  3. Consciously redirect your attention to something else.
  4. Strip the desire off of its attraction by cognitive reframing.

Where does the pleasure come from?

Pleasure itself – that good feeling you get in response to food, sex and drugs – is driven by the release of a range of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) in many parts of the brain. But dopamine release in the brain’s reward system is particularly important.
