Can a university go through your email?

Nope. Colleges can warrantlessly go through your university emails, too. The law generally prohibits the provider of an electronic communications service to disclose the contents of an email to another person or the government.

Do university emails get monitored?

Organisations and universities actively monitor their email accounts for violations of terms of service and their own policies to ensure that employees and students and so on are using their accounts fairly.

Can the school access my gmail account?

No. They would have access to the stuff you do on your school account. They can’t access everything just through their access to your school account. There are other ways for them to see what you do on the computer if they have things installed on it.

Can university track my web browsing?

Yes, they can in principle track your internet history if they want to, in the sense of seeing which IP addresses (sites) you visit.

Can the University access my email account?

University can access student emails. Yale students’ email accounts are subject to search without consent or notification by the University, as outlined in a publicly available but little-publicized document.

Why don’t colleges and universities offer G Suite email accounts?

Most colleges and universities offer a .edu email address to their students. G Suite is provided free to them by Google, so why not? Those accounts are NOT private, they are 100\% owned by the college. They can do anything they want with such accounts, including delete them. Private email accounts, however… That’s a horse of a different color.

Can schools read students’ emails?

Most schools have the ability to reset passwords (e.g., with branded GMail), so they have the technical means. However, I’ve literally never heard of a case where a student’s email was read, and I suspect that arbitrarily reading a student’s email might violate Google’s terms of service with the institution.

How can a G Suite administrator read all my emails?

For example, a G Suite administrator can set up rules to copy incoming and outgoing emails to a different account, or to copy all incoming emails to a different server. Alternatively, they can read everyone’s emails in a backup such as Google Vault, BetterCloud, Backupify or whatever.
