Can you ask a college professor for a letter of recommendation?

Can you ask a college professor for a letter of recommendation?

Make a formal request of your professor (by email or by appointment), asking if he or she would be willing to write a letter or fill out a form on your behalf. Explain the purpose of the recommendation and why you have chosen the professor. Give the professor time to consider your request.

Is it bad to ask a sophomore teacher for a letter of recommendation?

Junior year teachers are typically the best choice for recommenders, because they had you recently and for a whole year. Senior year teachers likely don’t know you that well yet, and freshman and sophomore year teachers are not very recent. Along similar lines, you want to choose a teacher who knows you well.

Is it bad to ask for a letter of recommendation through email?

Luckily for us awkward people, email has become ubiquitous and is now socially acceptable for something like asking for a letter of rec. You may have been advised to request letters in person or over the phone in order to make a more personal connection. You don’t just want any old letter of recommendation.

Is it bad to ask a freshman teacher for a letter of recommendation?

Ideally, you want to ask a teacher who had you as a student recently, within the last year or two if possible. These teachers are likely to remember you the most. However, if you really want to ask a teacher that you had freshman year, you absolutely can do that.

How far in advance should you ask a professor for recommendations?

Asking 6 weeks- 3 months ahead of time is generally the time frame professors like when planning out recommendation letters. Remember the less time you give a professor to write you a letter, the more likely they will say no to your request.

How many reminders should I send to my professor before deadline?

One email reminder a few days before the deadline is ok if you think the professor would appreciate a reminder. Some professors find them annoying, or even insulting. I like reminders, but only ONE. You could also just check-in once and kindly ask if anything else is needed to finish the letter.

Should I send an email to my professor to write letters?

Don’t send an email for each letter to be written. You are likely to be one of several students your professor is writing letters for in a given semester, so keep your communication with the professor minimal. One email (or one packet) detailing all the information needed to write and send out the letters is greatly appreciated.

How much notice does a professor have to give a student?

There is a general consensus that 6 weeks – 3 months is an ideal amount of time to give professors notice that you would like them to write a letter for you. I personally prefer 2 months notice and no less than 3 weeks notice. Don’t ask for a letter to be written during finals. No, just don’t.
