Wisdom and intelligence are both great qualities to have—but they certainly aren’t mutually exclusive. Intelligence doesn’t guarantee wisdom, and vice versa. In fact, while they may seem like similar traits, they’re actually quite different, though it is possible to have both.

For many people, there is no difference between smart and intelligent, because the words seem to be interchangeable. Intelligence, on the other hand, is something with which you are born. Your IQ is a measurement of your intelligence, and doesn’t change because it is a measure of your ability to learn.

Intelligence without education is like a powerful engine by itself — its power is not directed anywhere, and whatever energy is produced goes to waste. Highly intelligent people are the first ones to say “I don’t know.” Less intelligent people try to avoid the phrase because they feel that others will perceive them as dumb or ill-informed. Highly intelligent people understand that it is impossible to know everything about everything.

There are also certainly professions which require extensive training (education), but not extremely high intelligence. Your average family practictioner, for example, can operate just fine without needing to have a genius IQ.

Anyway, yes you can be smart without a college degree, actually for a lot of poorer people that’s the case everyday. All those lowly janitors and garbage workers and road workers probably are as intelligent as any college professors but either decided to work with their hands or had circumstances that lead to their not having college opportunities.
