As of 2016, no federal law protects beneficial insects such as the praying mantis and none of the “good bugs” enjoy any other federal animal protection law. But most bugs, being invertebrates, are explicitly excluded from Animal Welfare Act protection.

If even the dedicated advocates of X don’t really believe X, X is probably false. By this logic: If even morally scrupulous animal rights activists don’t sincerely believe that killing bugs is wrong, it’s probably not wrong. And once you proverbially throw bugs under the bus, why not other pests like mice and rats?

Do human beings have a right not to do these things?

Human beings must not do those things, even if they do them in a humane way. For example: if animals have a right not to be bred and killed for food then animals must not be bred and killed for food.
