FAQ

Does a battery under the hood need to be vented?

Does a battery under the hood need to be vented?

Sealed batteries do not need to be vented. Never install any type of battery in a completely sealed container. For safety’s sake, these potentially explosive gasses must be allowed to vent to the atmosphere and must never be trapped in a sealed battery box or tightly enclosed space!

Does a car battery have to be vented?

For vehicle applications that have the battery installed inside the passenger compartment of a vehicle, it is imperative the battery be vented properly. For those applications that have a single vent tube, the opposing vent opening on the battery cover must be plugged with the included vent hole plug.

Why does a battery need to be vented?

To prevent an explosion, they have normally sealed vents. These open when pressures reach dangerous levels. As long as the batteries are ventilated (and there is no source of ignition) this gas typically dissipate harmlessly. Lead-acid battery explosion is rare.

What happens if you don’t vent a battery?

You have a major fire hazard or even an explosion in your boot, as while lead acid batteries are being “used” they release toxic and flammable gasses. Also the gasses could/will leak into the cabin .. if that doesn’t kill you, then you’d prolly lose a damn few brain cells.

Do you need to vent an AGM battery?

Even though AGM batteries are considered to be maintenance-free, they still require venting. If you overcharge the battery or charge it too quickly for the absorption mat to keep up with, the same dangerous build-up of hydrogen gas can occur.

What happens if you don’t vent your battery?

Do all AGM batteries have a vent tube?

The answer is yes, they still need to be vented. This is because of the fact that AGM batteries are a form of valve-regulated lead acid battery. They’re “maintenance-free” in the sense that they don’t need water to compensate for hydrogen gas produced during the charging process.

Do sealed car batteries need to be vented?

Do sealed car batteries need to be vented? Sealed batteries do not need to be vented. Although most of the normal gasses (oxygen and hydrogen) produced in an SVR battery will be recombined and not escape, oxygen and hydrogen will escape from the battery in an overcharged condition (which is typical with any battery type).

Does the new battery have a vent tube connection?

The old battery did not have a vent tube connection, the new battery came with some vent tube accessories (a 90 degree elbow and a flat plug). I’m not certain if there was a vent tube in the car or not, will have to check tomorrow.
