The most common way authors are listed is by relative contribution. The author who most substantially worked on the draft article and the underlying research becomes the first author. The others are ranked in descending order of contribution.
How I can politely ask him for his contribution? Just sent him/her an email with a brief summary of the ideas you are interested in and ask him/her if he/she is interested on the project, it has worked for me. Can I edit a co-author of a paper?
As others mentioned, you can edit co-authors. If you have added the paper yourself, adding a co-author is very straightforward. If RG automatically created a page for your publication, you have to ask for permission (?!) to edit the page. You can also delete and re-add your paper, and in the process, you can choose co-auhtors from a dropdown list.
Why can’t I find my co-author in the dropdown menu?
An issue with the dropdown menu (for co-author lookup) is that it is not perfect. The dropdown menu sometimes doesn’t show the person you are searching for, even if your co-author has an RG account. So you might have to add your co-author’s name manually, but your new paper won’t get connected to their page (or contribute to their score).
