How long does it take to become a good fiction writer?

It takes 3-5 years to become a full-time novelist. This is not to say that, after 3-5 years, you will be an overnight success. It takes time for publishers to read a submitted manuscript and they only publish what they strongly believe people will buy.

Can anyone be a fiction writer?

Not everyone can be a good writer, let alone a great writer. It takes a certain skill that not all human beings can develop — the ability to tell stories, the love of telling stories, the imagination that comes with it all. No one can teach you these things. You must have them, you’ll have grown up with them.

Should I write fiction?

If you write to escape or to feel, think or experience something different, then it’s possible (but not definitively a conclusion) that you will enjoy writing fiction. If you write to document, to process, or to share a real experience, feeling or event then it’s possible that you will prefer writing non-fiction.

What are the best ways to become a writer?

The best way to become a better writer is to learn from the best. Once you’ve defined your ultimate goal, find out who the influencers are in your niche. Follow them on social media, study their writing, and get to know the inner workings of what makes them successful.

How to become a successful writer?

Write every single day. This may sound obvious, but it doesn’t make it any less essential.

  • Join a writers’ group. Find people who are at the same point in their writing career as you and meet up regularly to read each other’s work and give one
  • Find a mentor. Even the most successful authors were once in your shoes.
  • Read constantly. If you’re not writing your own book or short story, you should be reading the work of other great writers.
  • Build an online presence. Part of being a successful writer is marketing yourself; having a robust online presence can be an essential part of self-marketing.

    How to write better fiction?

Follow these six rules from George Orwell. (ii) Never use a long word where a short one will do.

  • Never use an adverb to modify a verb. ‘The road to hell is paved with adverbs.’ Overdramatic, sure, but it’s a good point.
  • Keep your exclamation points to a minimum. I used to be such a culprit of this.
  • Read your writing aloud when you edit. Simple practice, this one. Writing should sound conversational. Nobody says ‘accoutrements’ or ‘parsimonious’,they say ‘accessories’ or ‘frugal’.
  • Keep your description to a minimum. Fiction writing is about nothing more than story.
  • Do back exercises. Pain is distracting. This advice comes from Margaret Atwood. I suffer from back and neck pain a lot,and it does distract me.
  • Work at your own pace. Kerouac wrote On The Road in three weeks. But just because he did,it doesn’t mean you have to.
  • Know your audience. Who you’re writing for is the most important aspect of writing.
  • End each chapter on a cliff. Like a TV series, each chapter should make the reader want to keep reading. A good piece of fiction should be page turning.
  • Fiction writing should be relatable. Superman had kryptonite. Achilles had a vulnerable heel. Everyone has weaknesses and ‘a way to be attacked’.
