Is Artin algebra good?

Is Artin algebra good?

As for specific texts, Artin’s (mentioned previously) is very good. I also recommend J.J. Rotman’s introductory text. My favorite for beginners however is Thomas Hungerford’s Abstract Algebra: An Introduction which begins with fields first instead of groups.

Is Intro to abstract algebra hard?

In particular, abstract algebra is a pretty well standardized course: it’s a fully proof-oriented look at a few standard mathematical structures. If the student hasn’t taken a fully proof-oriented course before, this will be a steep hill to climb.

Is algebra easier than real analysis?

You begin with real analysis, because it is, on average, somewhat easier than algebra so long as you can remain motivated. You know 90\% of the facts in the course from elementary calculus. Now, you are learning how to rigorously prove them.

Do physicists use abstract algebra?

The most important mathematical tool I use today as a physicist is, no doubt, abstract algebra. Of course, if your question was, can I do physics without it, the answer is yes; but if you want to deepen your understanding, it will prove useful very soon. If you feel like taking this course, do not hesitate.

Should I learn algebra before calculus?

In some sense, the prerequisite for Calculus is to have an overall comfort with algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. After all, each new topic in math builds on previous topics, which is why mastery at each stage is so important.

What are some of the best introductory algebra books?

My favorite introductory text is Hungerford’s Abstract Algebra: An Introduction is spectacular because it not only lays out the basics in an easy to understand overall structure, but because he starts out with fields (which most students understand because they’ve got direct experience with them) instead of the more abstract groups and rings.

Is Artin’s algebra a good book to start with?

Artin is an Algebraic Geometer, for example, his chapter on Symmetry Groups requires that you really understand what some of these structures look like in space, but IMHO, it makes these topics that much more interesting. Depending on the subfields of Algebra that you are interested in, this could not be a good book for you.

How good is the MIT modern algebra textbook?

This text is used in conjunction with the “modern algebra” offering online at MIT’s open courseware site. Using the text in conjunction with the video lectures is actually quite effective, even for a first course. The book covers a lot of ground and as a result the proofs and examples are terse and require substantial effort to follow.

What is Algebra 2 by Michael Artin?

Algebra, Second Edition, by Michael Artin, provides comprehensive coverage at the level of an honors-undergraduate or introductory-graduate course. The second edition of this classic text incorporates twenty years of feedback plus the author’s own teaching experience.
