What does it mean when an item requires attunement?

Attunement. Some magic items require a creature to form a bond with them before their magical Properties can be used. This bond is called attunement, and certain items have a prerequisite for it. If the prerequisite is a class, a creature must be a member of that class to attune to the item.

Does a +1 sword require attunement?

Basic Magical Weapons and Armor: Your basic +2 Mace or longsword, or +1 Chain Mail, or +3 half-plate does not require attunement. Also, the weapon glows if you hold it. Mace of Smiting: +1 damage, more against constructs. If you roll a 20, you get extra damage, and can destroy constructs on a lucky roll.

Do +3 items require attunement?

So yes, in the strictest sense, if you leave an item inside the bag for 24 hrs it could break attunement. But tossing it in the bag for 10 minutes will not. Personally I would let it stay attuned as long as the player stays within distance of the bag of holding.

Can familiars attune to magic items?

Can you attune to a weapon you’re not proficient with?

There’s nothing inherently in the requirements for attunement that say that one needs to be proficient in the item in order to be able to attune to it. And the only thing that proficiency with a weapon does is allow one to add one’s proficiency bonus to its attacks.

Any creature a mount trusts implicitly can attune a magic item for them. This requires both creatures to be in contact with the item for the duration of a short rest.

The best I can come up with is an item requires attunement if its rarity is Rare, Very Rare, or Legendary, and it provides a permanent bonus (not consumable or limited daily use). Unfortunately, there are exceptions to this. The Mace of Smiting is Rare but doesn’t require attunement. The Cloak of Protection is Uncommon, but does.

Do you need attunement for every bonus?
