In 2007 Capt Gopinath sold his company to Kingfisher, owned by alcohol baron Vijay Mallya, who also owned Kingfisher Airlines. Mr Mallya rebranded Air Deccan as Kingfisher Red. By then other low-cost carriers had entered the market and still dominate it.
