To your latter point: my old Passat had oil gunking issues due to a small sump, something like 3.8 quarts. Someone found out that the oil filter from an older TDI fit just fine, even though it was bigger in diameter and height but the gasket was the correct size. Damn thing held nearly a quart of oil on its own.
