Montessori parenting is a relaxed parenting approach where toddlers are left to play freely, are not punished for being naughty, and are encouraged to sleep on the floor instead of in cribs, among other things.

A study by family history site Ancestry.co.uk found that only 7 percent of children end up in the same job as their parents today, whereas it was nearly half of children (46 percent) in Victorian times. Obviously the job market has changed more than a little since then, but even so, it’s clear we’re striking out on our own more than ever before!

For fathers in the dataset who work in farming, fishing and forestry, only 3 per cent of their sons stayed in the profession. But this probability was 7.6 times the overall rate. A fifth of daughters whose mothers worked in office and administrative support chose the same career, twice the usual rate.

This is because children have an insider’s glimpse into their parents’ occupations, making it easier for them to break in to the industry, according to the Wharton Global Youth Program. If their parents’ jobs give them great satisfaction or provide a comfortable lifestyle, children see the perks early on, and may favor these careers over others.
