Although social media’s rise has been sudden — Facebook is a little more than eight years old and Twitter just six — it didn’t occur in a vacuum. Before Facebook and Twitter, before MySpace and Friendster, there were Usenet newsgroups, AOL chat rooms and online bulletin boards.
How was it before social media?
Social media sites began to slowly trickle into the early 2000s, staking their place in the newly emerging market. Before that, however, came the invention of new technology, like computers and the internet. By the 1980s, computers were common household items, and networks began to take flight.
The internet and social media has drastically changed the way people all over the world interact and communicate. Social media networks allow us the opportunity to share opinions with a far wider audience. Another big change that has occurred is that there is now no filter on the way we speak.
What was the first social media?
May 1997: Six Degrees Six Degrees is widely considered to be the very first social networking site. Founded by Andrew Weinreich in May 1996, the site launched the following year and combined popular features such as profiles, friends lists and school affiliations in one service.
Without social media sites, there would be more mystery and you would have to form your own opinion of them from your experiences. You would need to sit and listen to experiences and look at photos at someone else’s pace rather than your own. Social media sites have completely changed the meaning of the word friends.

– MySpace is launched. – MySpace surpasses Friendster in number of page views. – Digg launches. – Bebo – an acronym for blog early, blog often – launches as another social networking site.

Is social media good or bad for You?
On the one hand, social media is a great way to keep in touch with people I care about and it gives me the ability to check in with family members/friends who live far away. And of course as a content creator and influencer, I love being able to reach people through my posts and connect with my followers and blogging friends.
What I recommend for everyone to do is take a break from social media. Delete your apps. Of course you can take pictures but you can share them once your break from social media is over. You’ll get a taste of what life without social media is like and perhaps you’ll like it that way.
What do you miss most about life before social media?
All in all, I miss the fact that life seemed to be a lot more simple before social media. You spent less time worrying about what everyone else and their mom was doing online and spent a lot more time doing things with the ones who actually mattered to you.
Delete your apps. Of course you can take pictures but you can share them once your break from social media is over. You’ll get a taste of what life without social media is like and perhaps you’ll like it that way. If not, that’s okay but at least you’ll know it is possible to live without it.
