In certain limited situations, when a patient poses a significant danger to self or others, it may be appropriate to restrain the patient involuntarily. In such situations, the least restrictive restraint reasonable should be implemented and the restraint should be removed promptly when no longer needed.

There’s never a black and white answer, but it might help to know when no contact is used with a person with BPD. No contact is when the non-borderline partner ceases all forms of communication with the borderline partner. (I now will just use NB and BP, respectively).

Due to it being a personality disorder, BPD is often confused with someone having dissociative identity disorder, where people develop multiple personalities. But this isn’t the case at all. People with BPD don’t have more than one personality.

Many people with BPD are untreated, but not because they’re unwilling. It’s because this mental illness isn’t treated like many others. For one, BPD isn’t treated with medication. It can only be treated with therapy, such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
