Why oxygen exist in O2 but sulphur exist in S8?

Why oxygen exist in O2 but sulphur exist in S8?

Atomic size of oxygen is smaller. It can form σ– bond as well as π– bond between O and O atoms and exists as O2. It can not form π – bond together with s – bond between S and S atoms. To satisfied its valency it forms S8 molecule in which all atoms of sulphur bonded with only σ– bond .

Why sulphur S8 exists as solid whereas O2 as gas at room temperature?

Oxygen is smaller in size compared to sulphur. Oxygen exists as (O=O) with weak intermolecular forces of attraction whereas Sulphur exists in puckered structure, octatomic (S8) forming S-S bond with strong forces if attraction. Hence Oxygen exists as gases whereas Sulphur exists as solid.

Why oxygen exists as a gas whereas sulphur exists as a solid?

The intermolecular forces in oxygen are weak van der Waals forces, which causes it to exist as gas. On the other hand, sulphur does not form strong S=S double bonds hence exists as a puckered structure held together by strong covalent bonds and exists as a polyatomic molecule. So, it exists as a solid.

What are the differences between oxygen and sulphur?

Sulfur is less electronegative than oxygen (2.4 and 3.5, respectively) and as a consequence bonds to sulfur are less polar than the corresponding bonds to oxygen. One significant result in that with a less polar S-H bond the subsequent hydrogen bonding is weaker than observed with O-H analogs.

Does sulphur exist as S8?

Sulphur exists as s3 and s8 and s7,s6.. trisulphur is not ring structure, some sort of ozone like,so unstable at room temparature.

Why does oxygen exist as O2 not O?

The difference between oxygen (O) and oxygen (O2 )is that the former is an oxygen atom while the latter consists of two O atoms bound together, forming a molecule also called oxygen. Oxygen is usually found as a diatomic gas. Therefore, we write it as O2.

Why does OF6 not exist but sf6 exist?

Answer: because for the formation of OF6 compound there should be six unpaired electrons in oxygen atom is requierd and this is not possible due to absence of ‘d’ orbitals , secondly the small atomic size of oxygen can not accommodates six fluorine atoms.

Why is S8 a solid?

It forms Pπ bonds. Sulfur (and Selenium also in the same group) due to its bigger atomic size has stronger Vander Waal forces among atoms. So it forms a solid structure at room temperature.

Why is oxygen diatomic but not sulfur?

Why oxygen molecule is diatomic whereas sulphur molecules is octa atomic? Oxygen atom is small and hence capable of forming pπ-pπ multiple bond and thus exists as O2. On the other hand, due to large size, sulphur does not form pπ-pπ multiple bond and form S8 rings.

Why does oxygen exist as O2 but sulphur does not?

Oxygen exist as O2 bcoz it has an electronic configuration as 2,6. it requires 2 electrons to fill its octet.this achieves by sharing of an another oxygen atom. hence a double bond between two oxygen atoms forming an oxygen molecule represent the sharing of 4 electrons. whereas sulphur has an electronic configuration as 2,8,6.

Why does sulphur exist as S3 and S8?

Sulphur exists as s3 and s8 and s7,s6..trisulphur is not ring structure, some sort of ozone like,so unstable at room temparature. S8 is most abundant allotropes of sulphur, why? In s8 there is a crown like strucure involving all s atoms to a single disulfide bond formation with each other using 3py1,3pz1 electrons thus attaining stabilty.

What type of bond does sulfur have?

Sulfur forms single bonds rather than double bonds as an element. It exists as disulfide but as an ion with two negative charges, not as an element. Oxygen does not have strong Vander Wall forces among atoms and so it exists as a gas at room temperature. It forms Pπ bonds.

Why does sulphur exist as a gas?

Therefore, it exists as a gas. Also, sulphur can accommodate to form bonding with other metals due to its higher covalency. Sulphur has a vacant D orbital so it can form Bond with other element are itself as compared to oxygen. Also O2 molecule exist where as sulphur is exist as S8 solid.
