It helps students take ownership of their education and make the extra effort to turn in quality work. After a time, students even begin to advocate for themselves when they need extra time to turn in good work. So in some cases, accepting late work is preparing students for life outside my classroom.

Why is it bad to accept late work?

Missing deadlines can make your grant proposal not be accepted. You can also miss accreditation from an accreditor if due to missed deadlines. Accepting late work in school, therefore, is seen as a method of not preparing students for what they will face once they are done with school.

How do you deal with a professor who is late submitting?

Try to talk to the professor that you understand his point of view. It may cool down the professor and he may be ready to listen to your reasons for late submission. If you are expecting your professor to extend the time for submission, it is justified on the professor’s part to expect more of you.

What happens if I’m late submitting my assignment?

From an instructor’s perspective, it’s not a big deal if you submit your assignment a few days late as long as you have a plausible reason. For example, one common reason among senior students is that they need to do job interviews. Less commonly students may get sick, or they can be busy with a major sporting event or a student union activity.

Without this policy, you might find students who are trying to gain extra days by being absent. If you do not have a consistent late work or makeup policy, your students will notice. Students who turn their work in on time will be upset, and those who are consistently late will take advantage of you.
