As a music major, you’ll discover new interests and passions. You’ll expand your musical capabilities as well as your knowledge of the historical and theoretical underpinnings of music. And you’ll gain inspiration and support from peers, professors and other mentors that will inform the rest of your life in music.

How hard is it to major in music?

Depending on a student’s area of specialization, music can be a difficult major. Most music programs come with specialization tracks, including music theory and history, performance, and composition, just to name a few. Some schools even have specializations focused on different types of music or instruments.

 The best way to motivate students musically is through performance.  Weeks or even months on end of practicing without performing for an audience gets old very quick, and students will definitely quit.

Why don’t some students become “musically talented”?

 Many parents who speak to me and claim that they aren’t “musically talented” simply had bad teachers and little home support with music practice. Students discontinue playing over the summer.  Statistics show that students who do not read over the summer find themselves extremely behind once school starts — the same goes for playing an instrument!
